GORE ANGLERS
ANNUAL MEETING OF SOCIETY. AN ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING. The annual meeting of the Gore District Angling Society was held in. the Gaiety Hall, Gore, last evening, the president (Mr O. Howells) presiding over a very large attendance. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the president made reference to the fact that many people could see no use in an angling society. This was scarcely justified, however, as it helped to keep the rivers stocked with fish and in other ways furthered the interests of anglers. He would like to Bee the membership considerably larger. The balance-sheet showed a reduction in the credit balance chiefly through the last picnic. • The, report was adopted. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—Patron, the Hon. G. J. Anderson, Messrs E. A. Pidgeon and D. McDougall, M.P.; president, Mr O. Howells; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. Speden, J. Hoffman, C. Matthews, W. McKenzie and R. Allison; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. E. Bolt; auditor, Mr T. Preece; committee, Messrs D. Graham, J. Ross, 11. Halliday, G. Strang, J. Rae, Proctor, Trusler, Clifford, McArthur and M. Sexton. A letter was received from the Winton Club proposing thaat the minimum length of fish caught should be Ilin, that the bag should be not more than 20 fish, and the season should end a. month. earlier. It was decided to write to the Southland Acclimatization Society informing them that the Gore Society was not in favour of the Winton Club’s proposal, Donations of medals valued at £2 2/cach were received from Messrs J. Hoffman and J. Rae and one valued at £1 1/- from Mr W. Trusler, these being accepted with thanks. Annual Banquet. Immediately after (lie annual meeting (he banquet was held, this proving an exceptionally happy gathering. A lengthy toast list was honoured, Mr O. Howells occupying the chair. In proposing the toast of “Angling,” Mr Nelson, of Invercargill, congratulated the Gore Club on the fine attendance. He then went on to say that the time was past when they could get an overflowing bag every time they went out as now one was lucky to return with a bag at all. The only remedy, he considered, was in conserving the fish in their streams. The response was made by Mr Medley, of Mataura. Other toasts honoured were:—“Kindred Angling Clubs” (proposed by Mr G. C. Hamilton, and responded to by Messrs Fox and Nelson, Invercargill, Medley, Mataura, and Scott, Clinton) ; ‘“Acclimatization Society” (Mr D. L. Allison and responded to by Messrs I. Martin (bowling), G. C. Ha.milton (croquet) and C. King (cricket); “The Press,” "The Performers” and "The Chairman.”
