BLUFF NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.)

A most enjoyable evening was spent in Willard Hall on Tuesday evening when Girl Guides, Brownies and their friends met to celebrate the fifth birthday of the Guides and the fourth of the Brownies. The Provincial Commissioner, Mrs Macdonald, and the Divisional Commissioners, Mesdames McCaw and McCurdy and the Misses Campbell and Rowley were present. The guides, under Captain Schoefield and Lieutenant Sinclair, and Brownies, under their Brown Owl, Miss Metzger, were inspected by the commissioners, each of the latter in turn being presented with a bouquet of beautiful spring flowers. Mrs McCaw then held an enrolment of Brownies, after which badges and service stars were presented to several Guides. Items were given by various members of the two companies. Mrs Macdonald cut the Guides’ birthday cake, Mrs McCaw that of the Brownies, and pieces were given to all present. On behalf of the committee, Mrs E. A. Nichol thanked the visitors for their attendance and also for helping along the work locally. On Wednesday afternoon the Bluff Clay Bird Gun Club held a practice shoot on its ground at Green Point. There was a fair muster of members, and as conditions were ideal for shooting some excellent performances were recorded. The reason of the outing was to encourage the newer shooters, and the club is highly pleased at the progress shown by these. Wednesday’s shoot was a preliminary to the open meeting on Labour Day when a large gathering of local and visiting enthusiasts is assured.

The Basketball Club held a meeting on Wednesday evening for the purpose of winding up the affairs of the club for the year. The president, Mrs R. V. Weir, was in the chair and there was a good attendance of members and supporters. The question of securing a new court for next season was .discussed, the necessity for such being stressed by several speakers. It was decided to hold parties during the summer months to keep the players together. In speaking on the excellent financial state of the club, the president remarked on the generosity of Bluff residents to which their present position was so largely due. The club started the past season with a credit balance of £l2 8/7. It finished with a credit balance of £57 15/-. It had also raised £l5 for the association in Invercargill. This was not only, an advertisement for the club, but for the town of Bluff itself. A- committee was formed to deal with all business relating to the club, and Mr W. Hardie was thanked for his assistance in acting as M.C. at all the basketball dances. Later Mr Hardy eulogized the work of Mrs Weir and her helpers, Mesdames W. Doyle and B. Johnston, to whose unflagging zeal, he said, the success of the club was largely due. The Bluff Lodge No. 48 of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes held a highly successful dance in the Radio Hall on Wednesday night. A large crowd of members and friends attended, and the function went with a swing from start to finish. \ Music was supplied by Bigwood’s Orchestra, and Mr G. Giles carried out the duties of M.C. Proceedings opened with a parade of the lodge, in regalia, after which a circle was made. Primo C. Tonkinson thanked all who attended, .and wished them a jolly time whether they were lucky enough to be Buffaloes or not. Several brethren from Murihiku Lodge were present, among them Bro. Adlard, who sang a number of songs which drew forth loud applause.
