OFFICIAL FUNCTIONS

ENTERTAINMENT OF DISTINGUISHED VISITORS. EXPENDITURE TO BE KEPI’ DOWN. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, September 25. It was announced to-day that the Government intended to keep within the estimate of £2,000 passed by the House of Representatives last night for expenditure on the entertainment of distinguished visitors. In 1928 £6,931 was spent in official functions and in entertaining visitors to New Zealand, but that was a particularly busy year and included the visit of the Japanese fleet which brought a brother of the Emperor of Japan, and the entertainment of that fleet in various ways absorbed an appreciable part of the total. “Last year £4,254 was spent, but it is intended,” said Mr D. Ardell, of the Department of Internal Affairs to-day, “to keep all functions for 1930-1931 within the £2,000 voted by the House last night if possible.”
