CAUGHT IN STORM
BRETON FISHERMEN ! MANY SMACKS MISSING DESTROYERS SEARCHING "DEATH ROLL ALREADY 48 (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Paris, September 23. It is believed that one of the greatest tragedies of the eea has overtaken 500 Brittany fishing smacks, of which there has been no news since a storm broke two days ago. To-day relatives were waiting fearfully on the picturesque quais of the little port of Concarneau, from which it was observed that some abandoned smacks were adrift. Destroyers are searching for the missing fleet. A later message from Concarneau states that many boats, fearfully battered, continue to return to port. There are pathetic scenes as the whole population scan the crews for husbands or sons. Thus far 50 boats are still missing. Eighteen men are known to be drowned from Concarneau and 30 from Lorient, but it is feared that the total will be much greater.
