PUKERAU NOTES

MEETING OF DAIRY FACTORY. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Pukerau Dairy Company, Ltd., was held last Thursday night, there being 11 shareholders present. Mr G. R. Herron, chairman of directors, presided. The annual report presented to the meeting stated that the whole of the past season’s output had been sold at B}d. per lb. f.0.b., and the return to suppliers was 1/7 per lb. of butterfat. During the season a waxing plant was installed and an addition made to the factory to accommodate it; a brick chimney was also erected. The usual 5 per cent, dividend to shareholders on paid up capital was made. A summary of the year’s working showed: — Milk supplied, 3,552,2051 b; butterfat, 132,.2941 b; average test, 3.72; cheese manufactured, 360,9641 b; lbs. of milk to lib. of cheese, 9.84; lbs. of cheese to lib. butterfat, 2.72. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the chairman stated that the results of last season’s operations reflected credit on the factory manager (Mr Flaggart) and his staff. The yield of cheese from the milk received was the best recorded in the history of the factory, and the average test was the highest recorded in Southland last season. He praised the efficient, services rendered by the secretary, Mr McKenzie; and added that the company was fortunate in retaining his services and also Mr Haggard's as manager. Mr Herron stated that as he had now left the district he wished to thank the directors for the support and l assistance given him during the six years he had been chairman of the board. The motion for the adoption of the report and balance sheet was seconded by Mr R. Edwards and carried. Messrs R. J. Potter and R. T. Edwards (retiring directors) were re-elected, and Mr G. Gordon was elected to the vacancy created by Mr Herron’s retirement, Mr W. D. Shelton was re-elected auditor. At a subsequent, meeting of directors Mr A. Herron was elected as chairman. On behalf of the shareholders Mr P. O’llagan made a presentation to the retiring chairman, Mr Herron, in recognition of his services to the company, and stated that during the 12 years the recipient, had been on the board of directors he had never spared himself in the interests of the business of the factory. Accordingly his departure would be generally regretted. He then handed Mr Herron a substantial cheque, stating that it conveyed the best wishes of all for his future prosperity. The gift was suitably acknowledged by Mr Herron. - The annual meeting of the Pukerau Tenis Club was held on Tuesday evening, September 16. Mr E. Hoare presided over a good attendance of members. The annual report and the balance-sheet, showing a credit of £3 13/8, were read and adopted. The election of officebearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr E. Hoar.e; vice-presidents, Messrs C. Tripp, R, Edwards and A. Millar; secretary, Mr L. Potter; general committee, Messrs Hoare, Potter, Woodfield and Aldridge, Miss Carter, Mrs H. Potter and Miss Murray; ciub captain, Mr F. Woodfield. It was decided to link up again with the West Otago Lawrt Tennis Sub-Association and Messrs Hoare and Richardson were appointed delegates to attend meetings. The opening day was fixed for Saturday, September 27. The third evening’s play in the series of tournaments run by the School Jubilee Committee took place in the hall last Wednesday evening. Prizes donated by Mrs J. Edwards and Mr F. Norton were won by Mr F. Trapski Jnr. and Miss Basse. Consolation prizes were awarded .to Mrs L. Millar and Mr J. Mason. The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Women’s Institute was held last Thursday afternoon, there being a very large attendance. The president, Mrs Nixon, occupied the chair. Miss Jean McLay gave an interesting demonstration of raffia tray-making which proved of interest to those present.. The competition in which members were required to show the best results ’from one pound of flour was won by Mrs F. Norton. Mrs J. Edwards then gave an interesting address dealing with the recent tour of Australia by the party of New Zealand farmers and their wives of which she was a member. Mrs W. L. Milne, who was also a member of the party, added briefly to Mrs Edwards’s remarks. On the motion of the president a vote of thanks Io the speakers was carried by. acclamation.
