Mr and Mrs Janies Heck are holidaying at Stewart Island. Mrs and Miss Pearce, of Invercargill, have been On a visit to friends at the seaside. ' Owing to counter-attractions there'was only a moderate attendance at the weekly card tournament on Thursday evening. In the ladies’ class Miss Woodward carried oil first honours with a score of 24 points, Mesdames W. J. Winton and W. Hopwood were second (equal) with 19 points each. In the play-otf the former won. The. latter, however, was compensated by her defeat in winning the hidden number prize. Messrs W. Trembath, T. Henderson and W..Spencer were equal in the men’s section, the two first-named eventually filling first and second places respectively. Those present were: Mesdames A. BAILWAY BALL. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual Wairio railwaymen’s ball, held in the Nightcaps Coronation Hall on Friday evening, attracted a large gathering from all parts of the district. The building was beautifully decorated with streamers, baloons, Chinese lanterns and greenery, while a miniature locomotive and signals occupied a prominent position on the stage. Mr W. Excell, chairman of the Town Board, congratulated the railwaymen on the excellent decorations, and stated that this ball was always looked on as the event of the year. This year’s function had proved no exception, and he expressed the opinion that the bull, if anything, surpassed those of previous years. Over 100 couples took part in the grand march, which was led off by Mr and Miss J. Finn, and capital music was supplied by Mr Len James and his Melody Makers. . The duties of Master of Ceremonies were ably carried out by Messrs J. J. Finn and W. Davidson. Miss McEwan and Mr John Muir were the winners of a jazzing competition. Messrs J. J. Miss Wilson, leader of the Junior Girls’ Bible Class, presented Miss Jean Russell with a copy of Moffett’s translation of the New Testament and in doing so referred to Jean’s excellent services as class treasurer. Jean had also been an active member of the Bible Class District Committee, a very important section of the movement, which the speaker urged all to .take more interest in. Mr R. Murray, leader of the Intermediate Boys’ Bible Class, who handed Master Joe Russel a pocket book, spoke of the help Joe had been in the class and of his bright, sunny disposition. The recipients made suitable response. Games and competitions were indulged in, the latter being won by Misses D. Goodall, M. Mcllwrick, Masters E. Hogg and B. Gow. A pianoforte solo was rendered by Miss I. Lindsay. After the singing of ’’For They Are Jolly Good Fel‘lows” and “Auld Lang Syne” the Benediction was pronounced. Those present included :—Misses W.
