BALFOUR NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The usual monthly meeting of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday night. Mr Cowie presiding over a moderate attendance. Before commencing the general business of the meeting the president reported on the delegation's visit to Invercargill to interview the district traffic manager'and the district engineer of the railway Department in connection with the removal of the caretaker from Balfour, stating that the delegation’s reception by the district engineer was not satisfactory. The speaker considered they were entitled to a written apology. It was agreed that the engineer be written to asking for an apology, failing which the matter would be reported to headquarters at Wellington. , A resolution was also passed that Mr Hamilton, M.P., be written to bringing before him the matter of retaining the caretaker’s services in the interests of the farmers and district generally. The delegation’s report of its interview with the district traffic manager was the reverse of that of the meeting with the engineer. The Chief Postmaster wrote stating that the erection of a luminous clock at the Post Offce would cost £9 15/-, which would have to be bome by the public, also the cost of mainttenance. The Southland Agricultural Clubs’ Association wrote enclosing particulars of competitions for calf rearing, crop growing, etc., and the appointment of a supervisor of the agricultural plots. After some discussion it was agreed to hold over the appointment until information was received as to the number of plots and competitors there would be. It was agreed that Mr Wraytt be written to thanking him for his donation towards the town clock. The unsatisfactory state of the footpath in front of the Post Office was discussed, and it was agreed to write to the member of the riding and bring it under his notice, with a recommendation to have it asphalted.
