At the weekly tournament held at Riverton on Thursday evening Mrs T. Egerton (Colac Bay) won the lau.es’ first prize. A piay-oti among three players resulted in a win for Mrs Hopwood tor the next. Mr Trembath annexed the men’s prize, Mr Johnston being runner-up. The hidden number prize went to Mrs Coulstou (Colac bay). The weekly meetings of the Girl Guides and Brownies are being well attended and useful work is being carried out by all concerned. Owing to the changeable weather deep sea fishing has been practically at a standstill for some time, but some fine catches of well-conditioned flounders have been made by netters on the beach recently. A party arrived by motor lorry this week bringing their boat and net with them. So far their luck has been good. The following members of the crew of the Rita, which has just returned from a successful trip to the West Coast, spent the week-end at Colac: Messrs Dallas, Belsham, and Valentine. Mrs T. Cleaver has just returned from a visit to Gore. Miss Mary Patterson is visiting her sister, Mts' G. Evans, Wairaki. Miss R. White, Tuatapere, is the guest of' Mrs Shirley. Mr A. Good, Invercargill, returned home on Monday. Mrs McNaughton is visiting friends at Thornbury. Now that the days are becoming longer a number, of visitors are staying at the cribs during the week-ends. Numerous inquiries for houses and accommodation for the Christmas holidays'are being received and according to present indications a large influx of holiday-makers should take place this season again. Encouraged by the success of the Agricultural Club’s competition last season when a pupil of the local school, V. Pont, secured first prize in his group and second in Southland for the junior mangold growing competition, a greater number of pupils have enrolled this year. Altogether 11 entries for potato, chou moellier, mangold and carrot growing have been received and two boys are entering for the calf-rearing competition. The dance in aid of hall funds to be held next week has been widely advertised and with the Silver Fern Orchestra in attendance a good evening’s entertainment seems assured. Members of the Hall Committee are in the-near future going to effect some much needed repairs and improvements to the hall. Painting and renovating as funds permit will be carried out. The gardeners and farmers of the district are pushing on the work of planting and sowing w'hile the w'cather is suitable. Cows in the district are daily coming in, and it is said that the factory at Hekeia will not be long in opening up for the new season. . The statement, ‘that the talkies would be installed at Riverton shortly has given great satisfaction locally.
