The birth rate for 1929 is the lowest since the establishment of registration, and the death rate is the highest since 1919. A statistical review of England and Wales discloses that the birth rate for 1929 is 16.3 per thousand compared with 16.7 for 1928, while the death rate is 13.4 compared with 11.7, an increase due to the high mortality from respiratory and circulatory diseases, plus the influenza epidemic. The suicide rate was 126 per million, which is the highest ever recorded. Motor cars caused 5799 deaths compared with 4492 in 1927. TOLL OF MOTOR VEHICLES. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, August 30. Deaths from accidental injury by mechanical vehicles on roads increased from 4492 in 1927 to 5251 in 1928 and 5799 in 1929. This is shown by the registrar’s statistical review of England and Wales. Exclusive of collisions between two different. types of vehicles, the deaths caused by motor cars increased from 1550 to 1660, and -those by motor cycles from 1043 to 1162.
