COLAC BAY NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) i On Wednesday evening, August 13, ; another successful euchre tournament was I conducted in the Drill Hall. After supper I a short dance was held, Mrs Davis supplying the music. Miss T. Egerton and Mrs Collision tied for the ladies’ prize and in the play off the latter won. Mr \\ . I'.gertoti annexed the men’s prize and Mr 11. Marsh was the lucky one in the hidden number competition. A fair number of visitors from Hound Hill and lortrose were present. The Colac School team travelled . to Round Hill on Wednesday last and played the Hill boys. A close, interesting game took place. The Round Hill forwards, especially Reece and Mason, played a good game, and their efforts were rewarded when Mason scored a try for his side. After a j passing bout Te Au scored for Colac, Wixon I converting with a good kick. For offside play Round Hill were awarded a free kick, narrowly missing with the shot. Colac again scored and J. Marsh converted. The game ended: Colac 15, Round Hill 5.

On Friday afternoon last the trawler Rita cast anchor at Colac Bay for the night. Local members of the crew, after spending the night ashore, sailed at dawn on Saturday- for the West Coast fishing grounds, where fish are reported to be more plentiful than in the straits. Some motorists when returning to Invercargill via the Pahia-Colac Beach road had the misfortune to strike a soft patch of sand when crossing the Urawera Creek near the Wakapatu 'claim, and owing to the incoming tide were in danger of having their ear damaged. Some willing helpers, however, arriving at an opportune lime rendered much appreciated assistance and extricated the motorists from a difficult

position. General regret was felt in the district when news was received this week of the sudden death of Mrs A. Dandy, at Raymond’s Gap. Although a native of Riverton many years of her life were spent at Colac Bay, and only recently Mr Dandy and his late wife left the district in order to engage in sawmilling in the Tuatapere district. Being of a kindly disposition, Mrs Dandy will be missed by her many friends in Southland.

The weekly meetings of the Girl Guides and Brownies are being well attended, and all are very interested in the work and show great keenness. Some residents have this week left for the whitebaiting season at Fortrose, where there are several parties camped in readiness to capture the elusive silvery delicacy from the Mataura.

The unusual spectacle of an aeroplane flying over the district on Saturday and Sunday aroused great interest, especially among the children.

Visitors at Colac during the week were Messrs Aberdeen, Forbes, Clode and Mr Mathews.
