FIRST FOUR PLACES FILLED.
(British Official Wireless.)
(Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, June 23. In the 24 hours’ Grand Prix endurance motor race at Lemans (France) yesterday the British victory was more complete than ever before. The first four cars to finish were all British. The results were:— Bentley, driven by Captain Woolf Barnato and Lieutenant-Commander Glen Kidson, a verge speed 76 miles an hour 1 Bentley, average speed 73 miles an hour 2 Talbot, average speed 69 miles an hour 3 Talbot, average speed 68 miles an hour 4 The Bentleys had a terrific struggle with a German Mercedes-Benz driven by Caracciola. Birkin, driving one of the five Bentleys, immediately challenged Caracciola and broke the record for a lap, but a burst tyre lost him the leading position. Other Bentleys took up the challenge and, after 11 hours’ fight, the Mercedes returned owing to engine trouble. Thereafter victory for British cars was assured.
Of the 17 starters representing five nations, nine finished. An Alfa Romeo, driven by an English driver, was fifth, a British Le Frances sixth, a Bugatti seventh, a Traox eighth and a Traox ninth.
