EDUCATION BOARD

THE COMING ELECTION. MR CARSWELL’S CANDIDATURE. In connection with the coming election for membership on the Southland Education Board, for which Mr W. Carswell and Mr F. G. Stevenson are candidates, the following mimeographed circular, marked “unofficial” and signed by Mr A. W. Jones, who is chairman of the Education Board, has apparently been sent to members of school committees: “In view of the forthcoming board election I think I should take this opportunity of bringing under your notice the valuable services rendered to the board by Mr W. Carswell. I think it is only fair on my part to bring under your notice the great and valuable assistance that he has rendered at all times to the progressive policy that has been put into operation by the board. You will recollect that he has supported every new movement that is of interest to town school committees. “In passing I might mention the reduction in the payment of water charges by the board in which there was a great deal of opposition, the beautifying and improvement of the school grounds and the provision of modern buildings and up-to-date facilities. As Mr Carswell has been my colleague on the board I feel I have a personal interest in the matter, and I trust that the town committees will loyally support him in his candidature for re-election to the board for a further term. I shall be glad to have your hearty co-operation in this matter.”
