JAVA’S PROGRESS
WOMAN’S OBSERVATIONS COMMONWEALTH LESS FORTUNATE THE COLOUR QUESTION (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright) (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) Darwin, June 13. Mrs Mark Foy, of Sydney, who has just completed a world tour, said that she was amazed at the prosperity everwhere except Australia. She motored through miles o[ cocoa, tapioca, tobacco and rice plantations in Java and marvelled when she learned that 49,000,000 people were living peocefully and contrasted it “with my own vast country of emptiness.” She said she asked herself why we could not emulate Java. “We can grow anything they grow and but for our wretched White Australia policy millions of capital would be available for plantations in Northern Australia.” she said. “While Java is moving ahead Australia, with superior natural resources, is heading for bankruptcy. You- never make good on land in the tropics without coloured labour.”
