GROWING WORSE
SITUATION IN MALTA “ANTI-RELIGIOUS” POLICY .OPPOSED ATTITUDE OF CLERGY (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright) . Malta, June 13. The political and religious situation is growing worse daily, and the clergy are actively fighting what they term the Government’s anti-religious policy. The religious organs which are joining in the campaign declare that the past is nothing, and that the big things are yet to come. A British Official Wireless message states that the King has approved of the appointment of Mr Harry Luke, Chief Secretary of Palestine, to be Lieutenant-Governor of Malta in succession to Sir Thomas Best, who has been appointed Governor of Windward Island.' It was upon Mr Luke that the responsibility fell of coping with the crisis in Palestine created by the disturbances of last year, Sir John Chancellor, the High Commissioner, being absent on leave. He now goes to Malta to assist General Sir John du Cane, the Governor, in the highly intricate situation which has developed there in connection with relations with the Vatican.
