BASKETBALL

YESTERDAY'S GAMES. Owing to the unfavourable weather, Wednesday matches for the past two weeks have been postponed, but this .competition was continued yesterday in bright sunshine. The following are the results of the matches: SENIOR. PIRATES (14) v. COLLEGIATE (12). With only eight players, Collegiate had an evenly contested game with Pirates, both teams giving good exhibitions of passing, and the Pirates forwards of accurate shooting. The two Collegiate forwards worked hard and frequently eluded the three Pirate defenders but the combination was naturally spoiled by the absence of the third forward. From the first throw, the ball went to Pirates' goal, play remaining in that third for some time before A. Abbey-Jones scored. Collegiate players secured in the centre, E. McStay and E. Shepherd combining well to send the ball to their forward third where C. Shaw passed to R. Henry who scored. Smart passing in the Pirates’ centre and forward thirds, resulted in two goals scored in quick succession by P. Garth. Collegiate centres controlled the game from the next throw and by quick passing and intercepting kept the ball in their goal third where C. Shaw scored. Play moved again to the Collegiate forward third from the centre, but the ball in an unguarded pass from’ J. Blackburn a Pirate defender went to C. Garth and M. Milne in the centre and to A. Abbey Jones in the goal third. V. Craig intercepted a pass between this player and D. Roberts and the ball returned to the centre where V. Henry secured and passed to the Collegiate goal, R. Henry scoring. Pirates goal throwers were several times in good positions to score, but Collegiate defenders were intercepting well, and V. Craig, tipping the ball as one forward made an attempt at goal, sent it out of play. A Abbey-Jones caught the ball neatly from a throw in by D. Roberts and passed to P. Garth who scored. For some time there was no further score, the ball passing quickly from goal to goal, but C. Shaw at length managed to evade the Pirates defenders, and passed quickly to R. Henry who scored. Pirates were playing a vigorous attacking game and the forwards were again and again in possession of the ball, but they were prevented from scoring by the efforts of the Collegiate defenders, V. Craig, E. Hughes and J. Hunter, A. Abbey-Jones from a favourable position near the goal secured from D. Roberts and scored. From the centre throw Pirates players again secured, C. Garth passing to the forward third where A. Abbey-Jones obtained possession, and scored from a long throw at goal. A good passing movement from the centre to the Collegiate goal, was spoiled by E. Cook, a Pirate defender, who returned the ball to the fcentre. E. McStay secured and passed to E. Sheppherd, who passed to R. Henry, this player, in turn, passing to C. Shaw who scored. C. Garth scored for Pirates just before the half-time whistle. Pirates 7, Collegiate 5. Collegiate controlled the game from the first throw in the second half, R. Henry scoring soon after play had re-commenced. P. Garth scored for Pirates and C. Shaw for Collegiate within the next few minutes. Play was for a time in Collegiate.’s goal and R. Henry neatly intercepted a pass between two Pirate defenders and scored. A. AbbeyJones scored for Pirates and R. Henry again made the score even by scoring for Collegiate. Pirates were, at this stage, in control of the play and good passing movements resulted in five goals. Collegiate scored three more goals before the final whistle. Miss. E. B. Pay controlled the game. RATA (21) v. ST. MARY’S (7). When play commenced the ball was for most of the time at Rata’s goal, but the forwards were unable to score, and St. Mary’s were responsible for the first goal. Play) for some time, was even, the ball travelling, by neat passing movements, from goal ,to goal. With the score 3—2 Rata established' a lead and with more accurate shooting on the part of the forwards were able to add eight more goals to their score before half-time. St. Mary’s forwards were responsible for only one more goal, making the score .11 —3. Rata had the better of the play in the second half, when their defenders gave St. Mary’s forwards few opportunities of scoring. Mr. A. Cutt refereed. 1

’KIWI (15) v. ST. PETER’S (2). ’Kiwi, with good combination, had much the better of the game. St. Peter’s players were responsible for some good passing movements, but the defenders would have been much more successful in preventing the opposing shoots from scoring had they passed straight to the centre, instead of wasting time in their own third. JUNIOR. ’KIWI (11) v. RATA (8). I The more accurate shooting of the ’Kiwi forwards gave them a four point lead in the first half. The combination of the Rata team was not as good as that of ’Kiwi, although ’Kiwi resorted too frequently to the long throw. E. Brown scored most of ’Kiwi’s goals while‘D. Strang and P. Cunliffe scored some spectacular goals for Rata. B. Stewart played well in Rata’s centre third. The half-time score was B—48 —4 in favour of ’Kiwi. Miss Hansen referred. HAYNCO (9) v. PIRATES (7). Pirates took the field with only eight players, the ninth player taking up her position half-way through the first half. The game was an even one and quite interesting., ■ COLLEGIATE (12) v. CENTRAL METHODIST (8). Central Methodist are showing great improvement on their previous matches, and Collegiate gained the victory by a very narrow margin. The half time score was 7 —5 in favour of Collegiate. Mr. Cutt refereed.
