LUCKY ESCAPE
LORD STRICKLAND. SAVED BY POLICEMAN. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, May 23. The attempt to shoot Lord Strickland, Prime Minister of Malta, was made in the law court at Valetta, the Maltese capital. Lord Strickland was uninjured, thanks to the prompt action of a policeman, who seized the hand of the assailant, who was a onearmed man and directed the shots upward to the ceiling. Lord Strickland remained unmoved by the episode and watched while his assailant was removed by the police. Lord Strickland was afterwards the centre of a great ovation by the large crowds. Three shots were fired at Lord Strickland. His assailant, whose name is Miller, is a notorious delinquent and a supporter of the Nationalists. MESSAGE FROM THE KING THANKFUL FOR ESCAPE. (Roc. 5.5 p.m.) London, May 24. The King has sent a message to Malta stating that his Majesty is shocked to hear of the attempt on Lord Strickland’s life, and is thankful for the failure of the dastardly act. The nolice raided a club in Malta where Miller lodged and found photographs of Mussolini and copies of a Fascist hymn.
