BASKETBALL

SATURDAY’S GAMES.

SECOND ROUND BEGINS.

MAKAREWA AND RATA DRAW.

The opening matches of the second round of the Saturday competition, played at the Waihopai courts, were for the most part, uninteresting. The match between Makarewa and Rata, which resulted in a draw, was played at Makarewa and was even and interesting. Light showers fell during the afternoon but the courts remained dry, and only a disagreeably coid wind made (day unpleasant. The following are the results:— BLUFF (21) v. COLLEGIATE (11). Collegiate took the field with only eight players, the absence of one. defender spoiling the combination. Even with the arrival of an emergency, after some minutes’ play, the team did not attain its usual high standard. From the first throw up, Collegiate centres secured and passed to goal, but good combination in the Bluff defence third prevented a score. Bluff forward third was then the centre of play, and although Collegiate defenders were able to send the ball to the centre it did not reach Collegiate’s goal third before two goals had been scored, in quick succession, for Bluff. From the next throw, Collegiate centre players secured, and in spite of the quick intercepting of the Bluff centres were able to send the ball to their shooting third, where C. Shaw scored. After this goal the ball was most of the time in Bluff’s forward third, but the shoots, in spite of the fact that they were playing against only three defences, missed many opportunities and added only three to the number of points. An emergency defender was added to Collegiate s team, with the result that the ball went more frequently to the centre third and thence to goal, where R. Henry was able to score. Bluff 5, Collegiate 2. From the next throw, however, Bluff again controlled the play and their goalthrowers, who were by this time shooting more accurately, were able to add five more goals to the score within a few minutes. Then, until the half time whistle, Collegiate centre players, by improved combination, sent the ball more frequently to the forward third, and in spite of the fact that C. Shaw, chief shoot, strained her foot, the supporting shoots, E. Botherway and R. Henry, were able to score three more goals, one by E. Botherway being scored from outside the circle. The half time score was Bluff 10, Collegiate 5. The game in the second spell was not so interesting as in the first. Collegiate opened well, and the centre players, who were able to keep the ball away’ from the Bluff centres, passed it constantly to the shooting third. The Bluff defences, however, always a strong combination, were more than a match for the Collegiate forwards, from whom they’ frequently’ secured. R. Henry (flayed well in Collegiate’s goal third and C. Shaw scored two good goals, but the Bluff players, were shooting more accurately than before and scored eleven goals against Collegiate’s six.

ST. PETER’S (7) v. ST. MARY’S (6). Although there was close scoring in this game, (flay was uninteresting. St. Mary’s had much the better of the first half when they scored four goals against St. Peter’s one, but in the second half, the shoots, in spite of having the ball frequently in their third, scored only two goals. In the second spell, an alteration of the position of some of St. Peter’s players evidently gave the team more confidence for the combination was considerably improved and six more goats were added to the score. Mr. R. S. Mclnnes refereed. MAKAREWA (9) v. RATA WThis match, which was undoubtedly’ the most interesting of the afternoon, was played on Makarewa’s court and resulted in a draw, this being the first time this season that Makarewa has failed to win. Rata played a neat passing game, but, although the ball was more frequently at Rata’s goal, the shoots did not take advantage of all their opportunities of scoring. Makarewa shoots, as usual, scored consistently with the result that at half time, they had gained six goals against Rata’s four. This lead they managed ip keep, during most of the second half, but within the last few minutes of play, the ball was, most of the time, in Riwa’s third and E and M. McCurdy were able to make the score even. Mr. N. R. Hamilton controlled the game. INTERMEDIATE. COLLEGIATE (26) v. ST. PETER’S (7). From the first whistle Collegiate had the better of the game which was curiously enough not uninteresting in consequence. This is St. Peter’s first season in the competition and they have improved wonderfully since their first match. The combination of the team ia good. The players can catch and pass well and shoot accurately but they arc very much smaller than members of other teams in this grade, and were, especially handicapped in this respect in their game with Collegiate. Collegiate with much taller players and a superior combination had, by half-time, scored fifteen points while St. Peter’s had scored three. The latter team improved in the second half, when the game was quicker and more interesting. Mr. Kinross refereed. BLUE (21) v. RATA (8). The Bluff team fulfilled the promise of their first game the previous week, and with a much improved combination, had an easy victory’ over Rata. Rata, however, were playing with only eight players and the combination of the forwards was spoiled, yvhen A. Raines moved to the centre, to strengthen that third, weakened by the absence of a player. Bluff were playing a better game and were more sure in the handling of the ball and more accurate in their shooting. The half-time score was 11 —7 in their favour. Mrs. R. S. Mclnnes refereed. > PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ GAMES. The following is the draw for the primary schools’ matches: Senior. May 30.—North v. Waikiwi at Waikiwi; Waihopai 'V. South at Waihopai; St. George v.
