OBITUARY

MR. J. P. McINTYRE. There are many in Eastern Southland, and especially those residing in the area between Gore and Tapanui, who have heard with regret the death of Mr. John P. McIntyre at his residence, Washdyke, near Timaru, on Sunday last. The late Mr. McIntyre arrived at BluS with his parents from Victoria in 1867. He was the third son of the late Mr. Hugh Mclntyre, who for many years was owner of the Merino Downs and Otikerama estates. The deceased was born in Victoria in 1849. He completed his education at the Dunedin Boys’ High School and was one of the first to take up land on the D.P. system when the Merino Downs estate was cut up. Previous to this he assisted his father on the abovementioned runs. Later he .acquired a fairly large farm at Maitland and called it “Hopetown," on which the deceased’s son Hugh, still resides. The deceased was a noted horseman, and as a judge of stock he had few equals. He was an ardent supporter and life member of the Gore A. and P. Association, and was one of its largest exhibitors. His exhibits of the Corriedale class of sheep were looked upon as among the best in Otago and Southland. He was also a keen supporter of the district dog trials, and on one occasion his dog won the £lOO prize. The deceased was also an excellent farmer, and his well-kept fences were indicative of the work of a methodical settler. During his long residence at “Hopetown” he took a keen interest in local affairs, and was for many years a member of the Maitland School Committee, and was also one of those who urged and worked for the establishment of the school. He was a prominent member and deacon of the Presbyterian Church. He was of a retiring disposition. In 1885 Mr. Mclntyre married Beatrice, second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. W. Nichol, of “Lillesleaf,” Maitland, who predeceased him about four years ago. He leaves a family of six daughters and two sons. The daughters are Mesdames Harry Smith (Waikaka Valley), John Johnston (Edendale), R. Malcolm (St. Clair), E. Hay (Morven), W. Hay (Waimate), and L. Allen (Balclutha). The sons are Messrs Hugh (Maitland), and John (Dunedin). The deceased’s second son, William, made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War. The funeral took place at Timaru on Tuesday last, and was largely attended.
