A message from Memphis (Tennessee) states that 16 were killed and 100 injured, the majority of whom were negroes, when a tornado swept the plantations. Cabins and farm buildings were torn to pieces. _ Medical aid is being rushed to the area, from - which communications have been broken off. The tornado caused 85,000 dollars worth of damage to the business section of Somerville (Tennessee).
Texarkana (Arkansas), South-West Arkansas and North-East Texas are faring badly from floods. The Red River overflowed and swept away bridges, cutting off highway and railway traffic, and drove residents of the lowlands to higher points. Rescue parties are battling with the swirling flood waters in an endeavour to rescue the flood victims. Crop losses are already tremendous. The rainfall, which has been heavy for many days, is expected to continue and if it does it is feared that many levees will break.
