GORE BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL. Last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council was attended by his Worship the Mayor (Mr D. L. Poppelwell), Councillors T. Sim, W. Gee, J. A. Wright, A. Davidson, A. McLachlan, T. A. C.'Pearce, 4. A. Baldey, F. Wallis and S. Young. Correspondence. Mr R. W. McKinhel applied for a refund on drainage from section No. 9 in Lock street.—Granted. The secretary of the Gore branch of the Plunket Society, Mrs Wilson, wrote asking for a donation to its funds.—Moved that the request be granted. The Under-Secretary of the Lands and Survey Department wrote asking if the council was prepared to display notices of the provisions of the Animals Protection and Game Act with respect to the protection of native birds, in conspicuous places in the public domain.—lt was decided that a number of notices be procured and suitably displayed. Messrs Bowler, Bannerman and Howells wrote asking for the council’s consent to the subdivision of Messrs Smaill Bros.’ property in Gore.—Referred to Finance Committee with power to act. Mr Adam Speden wrote protesting against the council’s action in renewing the lease to the pie stall proprietor without first consulting him as one who was likely to be affected by its presence. He enclosed a copy of a letter which he had forwarded to the sergeant of police in Gore in connection with this matter. —The correspondence was received. The Town Clerk, Invercargill, wrote stating that the practice of notifying the local authorities and motor omnibus proprietors in No. 13 Licening District of applications received for licenses to establish motor omnibus services, would in future be discontinued and that statutory notice only would be published in the Press. Mr R. T. Reid wrote applying for permission to erect a verandah over the footpath in front of his shop in Broughton street, and to erect a shed at the back of the shop.—Granted subject to the usual conditions. It was moved that the engineer should, in cases where plans were submitted for glass verandahs, submit them to the council for approval.

Dr T. S. Maclean, Medical Officer of Health, wrote suggesting certain alterations in connection with the room leased to the Health Department by the council as the present arrangement was unsatisfactory.— Referred to the Works Committee.

The borough foreman forwarded his report on the gravelling and grading of various streets and of the tar sealing of the north and south ends of the Main Street main highway. A report in connection with the proposed repairs to the pedestrian portion of the traffic bridge was adopted. An auctioneer of Christchurch wrote applying for the use of the Town Hall for two days to sell certain articles.—The application was refused.

It was moved that Messrs D. Tait and L. Smith be enrolled to fill the vacancies left by the retiring members of the Fire Police.

The secretary of the Southland Power Board wrote enclosing a scale of increased charges proposed by the board to raise an increase in revenue of £4OOO, along with a request that the council reopen certain clauses in the agreement between the board and the council to facilitate this. It was decided that the matter be held over until next meeting of the council, when it could be arranged to meet the board on some suitable date.

Councillor Wallis brought before the notice of the council the need of a fire-plug in Albany street.—Referred to the Water Committee.
