FIRES

RESIDENCE EXTENSIVELY DAMAGED.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wellington, May 19.

A two-storeyed residence of 12 rooms in Eltham was extensively damaged at 5 O'clock this morning by fire, which had a strong hold when the brigade was summoned but a good save was made. The blaze apparently originated from a spark from an open fireplace. The only occupant, E. Pratt, was awakened by the noise and escaped in night attire. The house was erected 27 years ago, and was originally the home of W. H. McGarry-, now of Auckland. For a long time it was used as a boardinghouse, known as “The Gables.” The owner is W. Christoffel, of New Plymouth, and the insurances are £1250 on the building. Mr Pratt had no insurance on the furniture.
