. QUARTERLY MEETING. The first quarterly meeting of the Southland District W.C.T.U. was held last Tuesday in Stpbo Hall. Delegates were present from all parts of Southland. Miss McLay, Dominion “Y” organizer, gave a devotional lesson on “Place encouragement.” Miss Birss gave a full resume of the quarter’s work showing that much had been achieved successfully and steady progress had been made. During comments and suggestions on the above reports some new ideas and formulae were accepted.
It was made known that the “Y” branch had been very fortunate in acquiring Sister Alice as its future superintendent. Reference was made to the successful garden party held recently in connection with headquarters fund. The quarterly report was adopted. Affiliation of the union with the League of Nations was approved by several members present. Mrs McGregor (district president) gave a short sketch of co-operative work at, St. Helen’s Hospital, members suggesting that a representative be appointed to attend and give a report of the year’s work. Bluff was shown to be a busy union in all departments, increasing its strength in Bands of Hope and union membership. In Riverton and Gore Miss McLay said that the outlook for progress was promising. She paid a tribute to the leader of the Salvation Army in Gore for much practical help. Mrs Mac.gregor offered explanations and suggestions regarding temperance essays in schools.
Mrs Reeves-Palmer, missionary in Egypt, spoke of her work in that quarter, showing to what extent the drug habit was indulged in by the inhabitants, its effect and influence.
