REDUCING OWN SALARY

£2OOO A YEAR SACRIFICED.

Sir Francis Joseph, chairman of Settle Speakman and Company, Ltd., colliery proprietors, and one of Stoke-on-Trent's most prominent citizens, announced at a recent general meeting of that company that he proposed to reduce, voluntarily, his own salary by £2OOO and to waive his director's fees altogether in respect of two collieries. Sir Joseph’s reason for doing this, he said, was that he believed that those who are in high positions should give some evidence of their willingness to share the burdens which are common in industry to-day. Other directors, he announced, feeling that something should be done to set an example to the staff, and to secure the team spirit which was the best asset in any business, had also waived their fees at two colli dries.
