THEFT OF MAIL BAGS

SHIPPING COMPANY’S ATTITUDE.

(United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.)

(Rec. 8 p.m.) Sydney, May 1. Officials of the Peninsular and Oriental Shipping Company disclaim responsibility for the mail bag thefts from the Mooltan and the Chitral. The postal authorities are now of. the opinion that the thefts occurred after the mails were unloaded at Perth.

A previous message from Sydney stated: The Postal Department here advises that bags of mail matter from Glasgow and Manchester received by the liner Mooltan, which is now in Sydney, were pillaged in transit. The bags contained a number of registered articles, which are missing. It is further reported from Perth that a registered mail bag has been stolen from the liner Chitral, now en route to Sydney. The lists of consignees are also missing, and it will be difficult to trace the senders.
