GENERAL NOTES. The s.s. Rita (Captain Cosgrove)’, arrived on Thursday from the West Coast of Stewart Island at 2.30 p.m. with" two tons of blue cod and one ton of groper. . According to advice received from Messrs H. L. Tapley and Company the Calm has been delayed in the north and will not now reach Bluff until May 8. She is coming from Lyttelton and is expected to clear the Southland port the same night for Dunedin.
The Union Company’s Kiwitea is due at Hobart about Monday to load for New Zealand ports, including Bluff. She is due at the latter port on May 10 and will probably sail on the following day for Dunedin. The Union Company advises that the Waiotapu, which has been delayed at Wellington owing to rain, is now expected at Dunedin to-morrow to continue discharging general cargo from Pacific coast porta. The vessel will sail cerly next week for Melbourne and Sydney to complete discharge. The fishing launch Mahoe arrived on Wednesday from Dunedin at 7.45 p.m. towing two launches. She made the passage in 21 hours. The three launches arc en route to Dusky Sound to fish for the Fiord Fishing Company.. The sst. Stella will freeze the fish and act as mother ship to the fleet. The Mahoe, a large and powerful launch, with engines of 50 h.p., will bring the fish to Bluff from time to time. The C. and D. Line has received a wireless message from their steamer Port Sydney, en route in ballast from London, reporting that she expects to arrive at Lyttelton at noon on Saturday. She will commence loading on May 5 for London, and will subsequently complete at Wanganui and Wellington. The vessel will leave Wellington finally on May 18 for London, via the Panama canal. The naval sloops Laburnum and Veronica, which left Wellington on April 25 for Auckland, were to arrive there last Monday morning. The Veronica will prepare for her island cruise, and the Laburnum will refit. It is not expected that H.M.S. Dunedin will leave Auckland for some weeks yet, and the H.M.S Diomede, which is undergoing extensive overhaul, and refit in England, is not expected back in New Zealand until the end of the year. During her last visit to England the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Ruahine, now at Auckland, had a considerable improvement made to the secondclass passenger accommodation, which has been altered to provide for only 50 passengers. This was brought about by removing two berths from each of the four-berth cabins and one from each of the two-berth cabins. This makes the conditions much more roomy, as passengers are now carried' only in two-berth and single-berth cabins in this class. The cabins have all been redecorated and the wardrobes, dressing tables, an'd mirrors have been renewed.’ Some of the two-berthed cabins have been enlarged. The second-class entrance lounge has also been enlarged. Similar alterations had previously been made on the company’s litter Remuera.
, Personal Items. Mr. W. F. Scott has relieved Mr. F. McLellan as second officer on the Breeze. Mr. J. Glasgow, second mate on the Himatangi, has signed off, and Mr. W. R.
