VAGRANT VERSE

SONNET: RENCONTRE. (Written for the Southland Times.) Happy the day when first I saw your face, Quiet, as flowers, flower-lit with many a smile, And felt the pressure of your hand beguile My heart from Care’s unlovely restingplace ; The ardent flame of youth, the strength and grace Of hope you brought, and love with s-übtle wile, And all your words were singing-birds the while, Making the precious hours glide on apace; And when the summer came and earth was glad, When the blue upland pools were rapt in dream, And all the land with music was a-chime, Friend of my heart, my stay when life is sad, This added joy was mine, this joy supreme, You came yourself and were my summertime. —H. P. Kclk. Roslyn, May 1, 1930.
