CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
MONTHLY MEETING. A meeting of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday atternoon when Mr D. J. Wesney presided over Messrs H S. Cordery, R. M. Strang, A. le H. Hoyles, W. A. Ott, L. S. Spencer, J. Gilkison, G. Boyes, C. B. Tapley, G. E. Broad T. S. Tomlinson, J. Pickard/J. S. Brass J Stevenson, W. Grieve and D Rutledge. Dr' Uttley (Rector of the Southland Boys' High School) was also present at the meeting.
The president introduced the question of a proposed return visit to the Dunedin Chamber and asked for the opinions ot members on the subject. Mr Gilkison expressed the opinion that it would be a waste of time to pay a visit if there was nothing of importance to discuss. Mr Tapley suggested that arrangements should be made tyith the Dunedin Chamber to hold half yearly conferences. The matter was held over until the next meeting of the chamber.
The secretary of the Unemployment Committee (Mr C. L. Grange) wrote regarding the question of a subsidy on all money to be expended on the Bluff road.
Mr Wesney said that it was now a wellknown fact that the Highways Board would not subsidize the Government subsidy on the road work. He was of the opinion that the money should be subsidized and suggested that the chamber should support the committee.
Mr Hoyles moved that the chamber should write to the Prime Minister about the matter and stress the fact that the public had subscribed .£lOOO for the work on the understanding that the money subscribed and the Government subsidy would be fully subsidized by the Highways Board; the Prime Minister to be urged to have the money subsidized and the work proceeded with. The motion was seconded by Mr Stevenson and carried.
A letter was received from the Gore Chamber asking for support in an endeavour to secure half-fares on the railways for children up to 14years instead of 12 years. It was decided that the Railway Department should be urged to raise the age for the concession in view of the fact that the school age had been raised to 14 years. A letter was received from Mr C. S. McKay asking the chamber to urge the in-' stallation of a telenhone on the Maheno during her stay in Bluff. Mr Spencer said that the matter was under consideration and the secretary was instructed to advise Mr McKay accordingly. Mr B. C. Clearwater (Mokotua) wrote regarding the addressing of correspondence for delivery on rural mail circuits. The writer stated that a letter addressed to “Mr X,” Otara Rural Delivery,” might apply to any Mr X between Rimu and Otara. ft was decided to send a deputation to the postmaster to discuss the matter.
