EASTERN SOUTHLAND SUB-UNION.
WEEKLY MEETING. At the weekly meeting of the Eastern Southland Rugby Sub-Union last evening Mr F. 'Murray presided over the following: Messrs -C. D. McConnell, I. Martin, G. WKrttingham, J. W. Aitken, J. M. Boyne, F. Wallis, senr., R. S. .Greer and J. Lenihan Mr F. S. O’Kane wrote tendering his resignation from the Management Committee and from the position of selector. —Accepted with regret. The secretary of the Southland Union wrote advising that two of the latest issues of New Zealand Rugby Union’s rule book had been forwarded. He stated that in all probability amended books would be issued, and advised the sub-union not to procure a supply of the present issue in the meantime.
The secretary of the Southland Union wrote inquiring if Eastern Southland would be represented at Invercargill on Country Day, June 3. —It was decided to enter a team.
The Southland Union asked that- the subunion give effect to the following resolution which is now in force: “That the old kick-into-touch rule be reverted to throughout New Zealand during the coming season, but such unions as may apply shall he granted dispensation to play amended rules in club, matches only.” In view of the fact that matches with the British team will be played under International Board rules, the Management Committee recommended that in all matches this season unions adopt the International Board’s definition of a mark (compulsory heel mark) and not allow replacement of injured players. This would give players some practice under the rules which governed all matches with the British team.—Referred to the Referees’ Association. It was decided that the paragraph regarding Injured players should not apply in club matches.
The secretary of the Mataura Club applied for a transfer for A. Lloyd from Seaward Downs to Mataura. A personal application and clearance were enclosed.— Granted.
The secretary of the Pioneer Club wrote applying for transfers for the following:—E. Bell from Winton to Pioneer; R. Fairweather from Star to Pioneer; V. Roberts from Blues to Pioneer; W. Archer from Pirates to Pioneer. Personal applications and clearances were enclosed in all eases.— Granted.
An application for a transfer from Orepuki to Wyndham for Popham was granted subpect to his grading being in order. F. Spittle applied for a transfer from Waikoikoi to Pukerau. A clearance was enclosed. —Granted subject to grading and residential qualifications being in order. The secretary of Albion Club wrote giving notice of the third grade team's default to Edendale on Wednesday as well as that of the second’s to Mataura. He stated that an effort was being made so that the fixtures could be carried out as drawn.
The secretary of the Seaward Downs Club wrote asking the sub-union to reconsider the re-grades of J. Morton, J. Dowling and R. Millar as none of the players could get off work to play for Edendale. —-It was decided to refuse the applications.
The secretary of the Pioneer Club wrote stating that his club disapproved of any move being made to transfer D. and G. Cowie, A. Kuvala and W. Mair to Waimumu. —-It was decided to disallow the transfers on the ground that it would unduly weaken the Pioneer team.
Regarding the affiliation of Waimumu, it was decided to admit the club. The Albion Club had not replied to the sub-union in connection with Woods’s clearance from Albion to Pioneer, but the subunion granted the transfer unconditionally.
Information was received to the effect that fourth grade matches only would be permitted on the Wyndham showgrounds. In the matter of equipping these grounds it was decided that the timber for the posts be supplied and the work arranged for in Wyndham.
The secretary of the Pioneer' Club made a request that a percentage of the gate receipts should be given to relieve the strain on the club’s insurance funds.—Held over.
A re-grade from first to second grade for M. Hoffman, G. Cowie and N. Green was granted. Regarding the default by Edendale to Mataura, an explanation by the defaulting club was accepted. Mr C. D. McConnell was appointed selector vice Mr F. S. O’Kane, who has resigned, and Mr M. Fitzgerald was appointed to fill the vacancy on the sub-union. Fixtures for Next Wednesday.
