Trip to Lake Hauroto. On Sunday last probably one of the largest parties for many years to visit Lake Hauroto made the trip. Leaving Invercargill at 4.30 a.m. in two char-a-bancs, a party of about 50 eventually reached the head of the Lillburn Road at 7.30 a.m. after a delightful trip. The long walk to the lake was then commenced. At the first fiord the party were met by Mr S. Gardner, who had a refreshing cup of “billy tea” awaiting the trampers. Continuing the tramp, the party were delighted with the variety of native bush scenery which greeted them at each turn. First the sloping bush-clad hills until the Big Burn was reached, next the tramp through the birch trees, which are so plentiful in the early part of the lake track, followed by the beautiful ferns which adorn the track for the last mile near the lake, culminating in what is probably one of the most beautiful scenes of a New Zealand cold water lake, Lake Hauroto itself. The numerous beauty spots were visited by those so inclined for further tramps, some were seen trying their skill with rod and line, while the, more energetic were tramping up Bull Creek or rowing on the lake. A meeting of the local school committee was held on Thursday, March 13. The following members were present: Messrs C. Gardner (chairman), W. Diack (secretary), J. Mair, S. Sanford and W. Whyte. After a discussion it was decided that the committee meet some evening at the school to ascertain what improvements were most necessary to lhe grounds and proceed with matters pertaining to same. Miss M. Gardner, of “The Cliffs,” left early last week for Invercargill. Mr and Mrs Petrie and family, who have been staying with relatives at Clifden House, returned to their home in Invercargill' this week. Mrs Conner (Invercargill) has been the guest of Mrs A. IL. Rowley. Mrs Aburn, Royal Terrace, Dunedin, has been the guest of Mrs M. Mouat (Eastern Bush). Mr Gillies (Dunedin) returned to his home after spending a vacation with relatives at Clifden.
