EXPERIMENTAL FARM

ESTABLISHMENT NEAR INVERCARGILL. CONSIDERATION OF PROPOSAL. A reply to the Southland League’s suggestion that an experimental farm be established adjacent to Invercargill- was received at the monthly meeting of the executive last evening from the secretary of the Southland A. and P. Associati6n (Mr A. L. Adamson). The letter, in conveying the information that Messrs J. Price and J. Gilkison had been appointed to discuss the matter with the league, stated that the opinion of the directors was that the experimental farms at Winton and Gore met the present requirements. The president of the League (Mr C. S. Longuet) stated that a sub-committee had met that afternoon when Mr Gilkison was prgsent. Reporting on the meeting, the secretary (Mr J. S. Dick) said that Mr Gilkison had stated that in his opinion so far as an experimental farm should serve for a radius of, say, 20 miles. Dr. G. H. Uttley, rector of the Southland Boys’ High School, who had also been present at the sub-committec meeting, had made reference to the steps taken for the furtherance of agricultural activities for secondary schoolboys in the Wairarapa. It was mentioned that there was an area in North Invercargill which might be available and, if so, would be eminently suitable for the purpose of a demonstration area for use by pupils of the Southland Boys’ High School and Southland Technical College. The proposal was that the boards of the respective schools should be asked to give favourable consideration to the matter, and that an effort be made to secure the piece of land in question, and also the support of the Southland A. and P. Association. ‘This, together with the support of the league and the boards of the Southland Boys’ High School and the Southland Technical College, might l>e co-ordinated and a deputation appointed to wait on the first Minister of the Crown to visit Invercargill with a view to securing the Government’s approval and support. It was probable that the sub-committee of the league would proceed along these lines. Tho secretary’s report was adopted.
