CHICAGO’S TROUBLES
WOLVES AT THE DOOR. LIVE STOCK ATTACKED. Vancouver, February 4. Real wolves are howling on the edge of Chicago, not counting those figurative animals which are making life miserable for forty thousand civic employees. Severe winter in Northern Wisconsin and Michigan has driven the wolves southward and recently the animals were tracked within thirty miles of the city. Lewis Mills, whose live stock suffered from their forays, engaged an airplane, drove three wolves from cover of their ground posse and shot two. COUNCIL CAPITULATES ADVANCE FROM “RESCUE COMMITTEE.” (Rec. 8. 25 p.m.) Chicago, February 4 With 40,122 public employees awaitinj unpaid salaries, the City Council capitulated to the ultimatum of Mr Strawn’s Citizens Rescue Committee. Backed by above, 50,000,000 dollars will be advanced through the purchaise of tax anticipation warrants. The Mayor, Mr Thompson, continues to regard Mr Strawn’s committeemen as “fake reformers,” and refuses to co-operate with other officials who see no other way to obtain the money Mr'Strawn offers on condition that the city officials use the money economically in a manner acceptable to the Citizens Committee. Meantime, to-day the city experienced two gang murders, making seven for the week. Bandits continued to ply their trade daringly. One of the most spectacular raids occurred when gunmen took possession of a mansion in the Kenilworth suburb, shut the owner with his wife and servants in a small cedar room, ransacked the house from end to end and with enormous loot which included jewellery, plate, money and clothnig, they escaped in a motor car.
