Spelling officers go round Constantinople and if they see a name or word wrongly spelt on a shop or office sign they can order alterations to be carried out within a week under penalty of a fine. During 1928 the British Broadcasting Corporation sent 765 S.O.S. appeals, of which 323 were successful. S.O.S. appeals in cases of illness are not accepted unless the appeal is signed by a doctor.
