BOXING

PETE SARRON WINS. TEACHES LECKIES BOXING LESSON. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, February 4. Pete Sarron, the Alabama Syrian, gave Johnny Leckie, the New Zealander, a boxing lesson before a crowded audience at the Town Hall to-night. There was only one man in it revealing ringcraft of the highest order. The American showed beautiful footwork and speed to practically do as he liked. Sarron rushed his man to the ropes in the second round and drove a terrific right to the nose from which the New Zealander never recovered. He had difficulty in breathing and was spitting blood, but gamely carried on until the end of the ninth round when he intimated that he was unable to continue owing to the difficulty he was experiencing in breathing on account of his nose having been broken in the second round. It is not too much to say that the New Zealand public do not know how really clever a boxer Sarron is as there is no one in this country capable of fully extending him. He proved himself the soul of chivalry last evening by refraining from unduly punishing a palpably beaten opponent. ________
