VAGRANT VERSE

A PIPER IN THE HILLS. (Written for the Southland Times.) Far in the hills at the break of day I heard a piper strike up and play. •Mute 'and alone in the seeding grass I heard his music approach and pass, and into the scene the ebb and flow of merry old tunes that I used to know; tunes that awakened the ardent fires „ of war in the hearts of my warrior sires and sent them, girding a sword and lance, to the shambles and gambles of bloody chance, sent them to challenge the tyrant foe, contented to die if they laid him low, freedom. their glory and battle a boon if fought to the lilt of that merry tune. But sudden away I turned and heard the untaught song of a wakened bird: the piper’s tune, with its warrior lay, was over the hills and far away. ' —Shaun O’Sullivan. Invercargill February 3, 1330.. ■
