GORE BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL. Last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council was attended by the Mayor, Mr. D. L. Poppelwell, Councillors J. A. Baldie, W. K. Hamilton, T. A. G. Pearce, A. McLachlan, A. Davidson, M. Hay, D. McDougall, J. A. Wright and W. Gee. Correspondence. H. C. McQuillan wrote asking for permission to put a 6 inch drain through his property for the purpose of providing drainage for three sections in Irving street. He also applied for the Council’s assistance towards the expense of same. —Application granted, the council to pay no part of the cost. In reply to a communication from the council, the Defence Department, Invercargill, advised that the council’s objection to a minature rifle range being established in the Gore High School grounds, was covered by the fact that the Department was responsible for any damage or accident caused by a rifle fired on a Departmental range. —Received. J. J. Perry applied for permission to widen the right-of-way into his property in Devon Street. —Granted. The Town Engineer, Invercargill, advised that a conference of Municipal engineers was to be held at Invercargill at the same time as the forthcoming Municipal Conference. The Secretary of the New Zealand Institute of Town Clerks also advised that the annual meeting of the Institute would be held at Invercargill on May 4. —Received. J. E. Coomer, wrote drawing attention to the high valuation placed on his section at West Gore. This section had been on the market for some time at the low figure of £lO, but so far he had failed to sell it. He understood that the Borough valuation was £5O and he requested that this amount should be adjusted—Received. Works Committee. The Works’ Committee recommended:— (1) That Hood’s application for grazing rights be declined. (21 That the Council’s consent be given to the Gore Section of the Southland Motor Cycle Club to hold evening sports gatherings on the Gore School reserve, but in the event of a charge being made for admission, the club to advertise same in accordance with the Act and to bear the cost of advertising. (3) That in connection with the tenders for tar scaling, the Foreman of Works put in a tender for the North Ward section onlv. (4) That the application for a taxidrivers’ stand at the railway station be granted and that 60 feet north from the centre of the station entrance near the tearooms be set aside for taxis, private cars to be parked on either the north or south side of this. (5) Re gardener’s report: That the timber and plants required for the completion of the rose trellis work be ordered and the necessary work carried out in next year's estimates. (6) That the portion of the cemetery adjoining the Presbyterian ground on the north side be ploughed and graded and afterwards drained. The report was adopted.
