LIFE SAVING
N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS STRIKING DISPLAY BY TEAMS KEEN CONTESTS (Per United Press Association.) Greymouth, January 28. Life saving day at the Dominion Swimming Championships, though marred by rain, drew a good attendance to the South Beach. This morning and the early part of the afternoon were devoted to the Nelson Shield event for which there were two tests, land drill and water work. Four teams of seven men each entered for water work, the sea being fairly heavy with a strong inshore set which after the Opunake team had completed their task caused the buoy to -drift in somewhat from point 200 yards out where it was anchored, the judges making allowances for this in timing. The winners were Maranui Club whose display on land and sea was excellent. Lyall Bay team with another fine performance, were second. Results: Maranui: K. Hoy (support), F. Jackson (belt), E. Raven, E. McHardy, H. Claridge (line), G. Earle (reel), C. Claridge (patient), E. B. Hughes (captain) 162 i points. For both tests, the times were 2mins 20secs for support, 2mins 51secs for beltman and 15 per minute for resuscitation .. 1 Lyall Bay: P. Ryan (support), J. Blakely (beltman), F. Mollier, H. Dickson, P. Pierce (lines), V. Mclvor (reel), B. Kuch (patient), E. Miller (captain) 154 points. Times, 2min 4 4-ssec. for support, 3min 40 for beltman and 15 per minute for resuscitation .. “
Also competed: Opunake team: P. Smith (support), B. Dudley (beltman), W. McCallum, W. E. Smith; A. Sinclair (lines), M. Smith (reel), M. Forbes, Falkiner (patient), W. Heggitt (captain). For the alarm event known as the William Henry Shield contest (holders Maranui Surf Club), six teams of four men each entered, the award being to the team whose beltman soonest reached the patient. Lyall Bay B team’s linesman (J. Blakely) and Maranui linesman (C. Claridge) made full use of the set and they finished first and second. Just, however, before Claridge reached the patient three waves obscured the timekeeper’s view and he probably lost some seconds thereby as when he again came to light he had the patient several yards away from the buoy. Blakely made a fine course. Results:
Lyall Bay B team: J. Blakely (beltman), S. Miller (reelsman), F. Mollier (linesman), R. Pierce (patient). Time, 4mins 49secs . 1 Maranui: C. Claridge (belt)., F. Jackson (line), J. McHardy (reel), K. Hoy (patient). Time, smins 4 l-ssccs .... 2 Taylor’s Mistake team: A. Bolain (belt), N. S. Batchelor (line), L. Moorhouse (reel), A. Lowry (patient). Time, 6mins 22 4-5 secs .. .. 3

The Royal Life Saving Society Conference to-night decided that future championships be held only on beaches where there are active surf clubs.
The conference adopted a remit that swimmers who have lost their amateur status through acting as paid beach patrol men be recommended to the New Zealand Council for re-instatement after a lapse of three months. A sub-committee was re-ap-pointed to re-draft the rules on the Nelson Shield.
