(From Our Correspondent.)

One of the best programmes yet given at a school concert in the township was staged on Wednesday evening in the town hall to a large audience, every item showing evidence of careful and efficient training by the teaching staff. Mr G. Sinclair; chairman of the committee, presided, and expressed his pleasure at seeing such a representative gathering present, despite the inclement weather conditions. He returned thanks to the parents for sending their children so regularly to school, and urged upon them the necessity for continuing to do so during the coming year, as if the average attendance fell below 201.1 they would lose the services of a teacher which would impair the efficiency of the teaching staff and lower the grade of the school. He also took the opportunity to thank the staff for the very line programme presented that, evening, and more particularly Misses Donnan, Robertson and Hardy, although the headmaster (Mr Theo Walker) and Messrs Crane, Henderson and Roberts had also done their share. During the year the high standard of work had been maintained, and the school was well to the fore again. The results of the proficiency examinations compared very favourably with those of other schools in Southland, and spoke volumes for the headmaster. The speaker mentioned that the venue of the annual school picnic would be CoJac Bay, and this would be held on the first Thursday after the school resumed in February. lie wished to thank Miss Renowden for assisting as pianiste, and also Mrs Ireland and Miss Halpin for their help with the dances. He was pleased to say that the dux this year was Donald Brass, • and tn presenting him with a medal said he had received all his education at the local school, and trusted he would be as successful at the secondary and high schools. It was very- gratifying that country boys did so well at these schools, which went to prove that they received education equally as good in the country as in the city. The recipient’s sister, Marjory Brass, had secured the medal on a previous occasion. Cheers were given for the recipient when he accepted the medal. Mr Sinclair said they were greatly indebted to the Library Committee for donating two prizes each year, the winners being entitled to free membership for 12 months. He then presented these to the runners-up for the dux medal, Misses Annie McGregor and Ena Thomson. The speaker said he had another pleasant duty to perform. Three pupils had gained first-class attendance certificates for the past eight years, and although the practice had been for some time not to give prizes but to concentrate on the building up of a school library, which carried a Government subsidy, the committee considered that it was only right and proper on this occasion to waive the rule. It was very gratifying to the teachers to know that these pupils attended so regularly, and in presenting Misses Annie McGregor, Alys Chilton and Ena Thomson with the prizes he congratulated them on their splendid performance. The chairman mentioned that the Southland Rugby Football Union had forwarded certificates to be presented to the Otautau boys who had represented Southland in the primary school representative match, and called upon Mr A. A. Liddell, vice-president of the Western District Rugby Sub-union, to perform this duty. Mr Liddell deprecated the fact that ‘'petticoats” had taken such a prominent part in the programme that night, and hoped the teaching staff would remedy this in the future. It was an honour to represent Southland in the primary school team, and it was also an honour for Otautau to supply one-fifth of the team. He had very much pleasure in asking Verdun Chilton, Jas. Thomson and Thomas Smellie to come forward and take the certificates, remarking that he hoped they would play the “good old game” for many years to come, that they would cherish these trophies, and be able to look back on them with pleasure in years to come.

The following programme was rendered: Medlev, senior pupils; playette, infants; dance, Miss M. Sinclair; song, Standard II pupils; lullaby, Standard I; folk dance, senior girls; medley, Standard II pupils; fairies’ dance, Standard I girls; recitation, A. Allen; medley, infants; dance, Miss Nancy Maxwell; “Maggie,” senior pupils; “Sandman’s Song,” Standard I pupils; eurythmics, senior girls; Jumble Sale, Standard II pupils; Grecian dance, senior girls; recitation, A. Manson; Street Urchins, senior pupils, recitation, B. Rawlinson: dance, Miss B. Ireland; “Green Valley,” senior pupils; recitation, Peter Jacquicry; dance, Miss Lily Maxwell; “Aloha Oe,” senior pupils. Presentations. Prior to severing their connection with the Otautau School, Miss Hardy and Mr Roberts were entertained by the headmaster (Mr Theo Walker) and Mrs Walker, and the teaching staff at afternoon tea in the school. The headmaster apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr G. Sinclair, chairman of the committee. At a convenient interval, Mr Walker said he regretted the time had come to say good-bye to Mr Roberts, who had worked well for the school. Just as they had come to understand one another, he had to depart for pastures new. lie was sure if the departing guest continued in the way he had begun, in due time he would occupy a fairly responsible position. The experience gained in the infant room, with the able assistance of Miss Donnan, should stand him in good stead. In asking him to accept an Eversharp pencil as a memento of the time he had spent in Otautau, Mr Walker trusted he would be successful in the future. In supplementing these remarks Mr Henderson paid a tribute to the assistance received from Mr Roberts by the members of the staff, who all wished him success in the profession. They trusted he would quickly get a permanent position when the

school reopened. In presenting Miss Hardy with a trinket tray, Mr Walker said she had carried out her duties as probationer for the last 12 months with credit, and was more like one of the regular members of the staff. When she got into the Training College the training she had received would be of benefit to her, and after she was through with the College the speaker trusted to see her back as a member of the permanent staff. Misses Donnan and Robertson, Messrs Crane and Henderson expressed regret that both were severing their connection with the school, and wished them every success. Mr Roberts returned thanks for the gift and in replying on behalf of Miss Hardy, Mr Crane thanked those present for their kind remarks and gift in recognition of her progress. She had made fast triends in the school and had enjoyed her work. 'Die speaker concluded by wishing all the compliments of the season. 31 AT AU RA (From Our Correspondent.) The annual break-up for the Christmas vacation of the Mataura School took place on Friday at the recreation grounds befdre a large attendance of school children and their parents and friends. The weather was dull, but kept fine. Mr T. Major (chairman of the School Committee) presided and during the course of his remarks stated pleasure at seeing so many present. He congratulated the staff and school children on the completion of a most successful year. The report of the inspectors reflected credit on the teachers anti children and the results of the recent examination had been most, gratifying. All were aware that a dental clinic sub-base was being erected which would be a great boon to the children of the district and he hoped that parents would take full advantage of the clinic. The speaker concluded by wishing all the compliments of the season and a pleasant holiday. Mr A. W. Jones, chairman of the Southland Education Board, addressed the children and exhorted them to strive to do their best. He quoted many appropriate and interesting passages from literature in support of the idea “Do Your Best,” in

all circumstances. He congratulated the children and teachers on the completion of a successful year’s work and wished them all a Merry Christmas, and hoped that 1930 would be even more successful. Mr Jones then presented the Std. VI prizes. Major S. Rice, a member of the Education Board, the Rev. R. Mackie, Mr R. Hutton, president of the.R.S.A., and Mr C. D. McConnell, Mayor of Mataura, also aildressed the children. Major Rice presented the Std IV and V prizes, the Rev. R. Mackie the prizes to Std 1,2 and 3, Mr Hutton the four prizes for the best essays an Anzac Day, and the Mayor the sports prizes. This part of the programme was concluded by the presentation of t£ie Proficiency and Competency certificates by Mr A. W. EDENDALE The Edendale School break-up commenced on Friday at 11.30 a.m. when infants assembled in their room to receive a gift from a prettily-decorated Christmas tree. Lunch followed, and a little after 1 p.in. Mr Bisset, chairman of the committee, asked all present to join in the National Anthem. He spoke briefly of various matters connecter! with school welfare and break-ups and then Mr A. W. Jones, chairman of the Education Board, addressed the pupils and parents assembled on the concrete area. After a helpful and inspiring address to the scholars, he stated his pleasure at being present at an old school of his boyhood, es[x?cially when he had another pleasant duty to perform, that of presenting tp the school the Sports Shield which had been won by the Edendale School at the last meeting of the Invercargill and suburban school sports. With wellchosen and happy words to the scholars, he presented the shield which was accepted on behalf of the school by Hugh Mawdsley, a senior pupil who was congratulated by Mr Jones on his splendid sports record. The next speaker was Mr Rice who delighted his audience with his kind, cheerful, humorous and sound advice. His duty was to present a medal, three certificates and two trophies to successful scholars of the school. The medal, a handsome gold medal, was awarded by the S.S.S.A. as a championship medal and was won by Hugh Mawdsley who had the fine record of five wins to his credit. Mr Rice next presented certificates from the same sports body to Joan McDonald and Edward Jones who had also been successful competitors. Handsome cups donated by the employees of the Edendale Dairy Factory to be held in school by winners for twelve months were presented by Mr Rice to Winnie Cranstoun and Douglas Ward for most improvement in hockey and football respectively. In conclusion Mr Rice stated how much pleasure he had had in being present to take part in the break-up of the school. Mr R. Blick, the headmaster, thanked Mr Jones and Mr Rice for their kind remarks and said it gave pleasure to all to know the shield was to be held by Edendale for the ensuing year. It had been hoped that Mr Cushen, the preceding headmaster would be able to be present as it was during his term of office that the shield had been won. Unfortunately Mr Cushen was unable to be present, but his good wishes would be with the school.
