SPORTING

NOTES BY SIR MODRED.

Entries for the Southland Racing Club’s Summer meeting are due on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Acceptances for the Gore Trotting Club’s Annual fixture on Boxing Day close tomorrow night. / - The recent performances of Trodice suggest that she was not at her best at the N.Z. Cup fixture. Mr H. A. Pie'rce will act as handicapper for the Tapanui Racing Club’s annual meeting on February 5. Entries for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s Summer fixture on January 1 and 2 are due to-morrow. P. V. Mason has left Riccarton for Auckland with Jaleux. Greenaway, Praise and the brilliant Honour. Great Star is to leave for Auckland tomorrow where he will be ridden by Riccarton jockey A. Eastwood. H. Nurse, who won ten races on the West Coast last year will cover the same ground this year with seven horses. F. E. Loomb, the owner of Prodice, has now prepared the winner of the Te Awamutu Cup on five occasions. » It is estimated that this season there will be the largest gathering of horses ever seen at West Coast meetings. Four Auckland Cup candidates, Prodice, Transformer, Corinax, and-Hying Juliet ran in the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday. If started in the Railway Handicap at Auckland Aspiring will have a good chance, ns she has 7.5 (including a 51b penalty). It is satisfactory to note that efforts are being made by the light harness ruling today to put down “whip flourishing.” It has yet to be decided as to where Mr T. H. Lowry’s horses will race during the holidays, but probably at Auckland meeting. Concentrate will be ridden by B. H. Morris at the Egmont meeting this week, but H. Gray will pilot him in Auckland Cup. It is reported that Silver Paper is being sent ba.k from Trentham to Riccarton and it is doubtful whether he will race over the holidays. After racing at the Manawatu R.C. fixture, Cimabue, Dolomite, and Diana’s Lad may be sent north for the last two days of the A.R.C. meeting. Christchurch Times states that Auckland jockey. E. Manson, may ride Hoylake and Phastar in their races at the Manawatu Racing Club fixture. From the meagre details to hand, Corinax apjiears to have raced badly iu the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday, but he may do better at Ellerslie. Reports from the north are to the effect that Paquito, Star Stranger and Corinax are about equal favourites for the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day. H. Gray is to steer the speedy Lady Quex in the Auckland R.C. Railway Handicap, an event for which she is claimed to be an outstanding first fancy. With Jovial (F. Thompson) as schoolmaster on the S.R.C. tracks on Saturday Calham (C. F. Low) put in useful work over five flights of hurdles, the last two being jumped smartly. Owing to the fact that he is a very hard puller Vertigern (7.7) is an unlikely starter in the Auckland Cup, as it is difficult to find a lightweight to keep him in hand. A three-year-old filly by Sutala—Adour, and a sister to Shalimar, both bred by Mr G. D. Greenwood, has been added to F. W. Ellis’s team by Mr T. Baird, owner of Battle Maid. Star Stranger, Cylinder, Knightlike, and Hunting Day are to race at the Egmont fixture this week after which they will be taken to Ellerslie by J. H. Jefferd for Auckland Cup meeting. Indications point to the fact that Star Stranger has been specially prepared for the forthcoming Auckland Cup, and those who have seen him in action on recent occasions say he will be at his best. Contradictory reports have been in vogue of late as to Silver Paper, but, as he is not on the list of horses absent from the tracks, the chances are that he may be found competing at holiday time. The locally-trained Celerity H, who is (raining, on the right way at present, wa.an early worker on Saturday morning, and ran out a strong mile with the speedy mare Full Fling to bring her home. The Egmont R.C. innovation of holding its summer meeting a few days prior - to the Christmas holidays is likely to prove a great success as far as the quality and strength of fields go, but the public may not respond. When galloping at Auckland R.C. headquarters on Thursday morning The Lover struck himself and pulled up lame, but the trouble is not considered to be serious. This mishap probably kept him out of the Te Awamutu Cup. The leading members of F. W. Ellis’s string, Queen Balboa and King Balboa were galloped together on the S.R.C. plough circuit on Saturday and came home fast, but the relatives were not severely taxed and pulled up well. At the monthly meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association on Friday the deaths of the following horses were reported Author Dillon, Peter, Swift, Sir Fulham, Successful, Waverley, Lady Barrington and Gray Lady. The stewards of the English Jockey Club recently fined S. Wootton £lO on each count for failing to see that one of his apprentices was not on the course after being engaged to ride two horses. It is not often that apprentice riders shirk their riding engagements. Owners and trainers will be interested to note that at the Tapanui Racing Club’s Annual fixture the Tapanui Handicap, £ll5 (1.1 m. and the Farewell Handicap, £B5 (6f.) are for horses that have not won a race of the value of £l5O or over to the winner at the time of starting. Prodice, who carried p. 3 to victory in the Te Awamutu Cup on Saturday, ran un-. placed in the same event last season with 7.13 in the saddle. On- that occasion Desert Glow (7.13) scored from Siaosi (7.9) and The Lover (7.1). Prodice was bracketed with the winner. The New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club reported to last week’s meeting of the New Zealand Trotting Association that A. E. Bussell had been fined £lO and cautioned for undue use of the whip on the horse Tamerlane. Bussell had swung his whip across the course, and such use of the whip might have interfered with other horses.— It was stated that Bussell had been guilty of the- same offence several times previously, and the association decided, in addition to the fine, that Bussell’s driver’s licence be suspended for three months from the date’ of the offence. Following on the Egmont Racing Club’s meeting-this week on December 18 and 19, the well-known Hawkes Bay owner-trainer, J. M. Cameron, will Hawk, Hunting Cry, Goshawk, and*Merry Mint, to Ellerslie to fulfil engagements at -the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Fixture.

The Trentham correspondent of Christchurch Times states that Aspiring is to go north to contest the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, her only engagement, and an effort is being made to secure H. Wiggins to ride her. She is remaining at Awapuni for a fe& days in charge of G. New. Mr. W. H. Gaisford had received some rather unfavourable reports about Commendation recently (remarks a Wellington scribe, but a letter from George Price by this week’s mail quite reassured him. Price stated that the big Lknond gelding had settled down well, and with a good strong boy to ride him in his work, he was making good progress. So far Price has not given Commendation anything more than pace work, as he does not wish the gelding to become stirred up in his new.quarters. The popular Sydney trainer advised Mr. Gaisford to pass by the mid-summer meetings at Randwick and give Commendation every chance, for there are plenty of good races in the early autumn. No doubt this will be the plan adopted, and Sydneyites will not see Commendation in action for some time. , At the monthly meeting of the Board of the New Zealand Trotting Association on Friday the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club gave particulars of an inquiry it had held over an accident that had occurred at the start of the Dominion- Handicap at the November meeting. It will be remembered that Young Blake and Trampfast collided at the start of the race, and W. T. Lowe, Trampfast’s driver, was dislodged from the sulky. The evidence of W. J. Tomkinson, W. T. Lowe, A. Sutton, and A. J. Hastings was read, and it was decided that, the occurrence was accidental. A further .inquiry had been held by the club as a result of further information received. —It was decided to draw the attention of the club to the effect that Tomkinson was not present at the second inquiry. WORK AT WINGATUI. PREPARATION FOR D.'J.C. MEETING. SOME INTERESTING GALLOPS. (Special to the Times.) Dunedin, December 14. At Wingatui on Saturday morning, the outside of the course and the plough track were available for use and also the inside of the course proper for two-year-olds. Royal Saxon, who is in good order, covered about ten furlongs at threequarter pace. Fun and Fancy and High Speed galloped over six furlongs on the grass in Imin 21 2-ssccs. The former appeared to be doing its best. Half a mile was the sprint task allotted to Full Flight and Francolin. It was done along the back of the course and the time was 53secs. Camisader and Money Mine, with only a slight difference in weight in favour of the former, did the first two furlongs of ten furlongs in 28 l-ssecs and the full distance in 2.17. Camisader, who led all the way, recorded a good gallop which was witnessed tfy his owner. Sudden Storm cantered and then sprinted three furlongs on the plough in 39sec. . Gold Tinge and Glenrowan were associate ed in six furlongs on the course which they did in 1.20. Narrative, whose action is rather cramped at present, went six furlongs on the grass with Positive, the time being 1.23. Black Duke, who Is very well, did a round on the grass at half pace. Antrim Boy was given steady pace work finishing up with a sprint down the straight. Sailing Home and Stealth were tod good for Some Toff over seven furlongs in Imin 34 l-osec. Impertinence and Solniar covered three furlongs on the plough in 40sec. with the former doing its best. Compensation was in front of Banderilia at the end of four furlongs in olsecs, the gallop being done on the inside of the course. Paquita and Moth were not doing their best at. the end of six furlongs on the grass in 1.23. Wig Wag was well beaten by Meitui over six furlongs on the same track in Imin 20 sec. Battle Screen and Broadfield were going comfortably at the end of five furlongs in Imin 7 2-ssecs. Dubious was given long steady work on the plough and Caterpillar, who looks very well, was given two rounds at a rsteady pace on the grass. Beauty Light and Jimmy Trigger gave a good display over two schooling hurdles. The former looks very well. Royal Flower and Captivate finished together at the end of six furlongs on the grass in Imin 20 3-ssec. High Gear had the best of a six furlong spin with Tembroney taking Imin 21sec. Court Jester led Stringbow and Crossbow home in a gallop over six furlongs on the grass, the last five taking Imin Bsec. Waving Corn was too good for Tardy over a mile gallop on the course proper in Imin 48 2-ssecs. NEW BRIGHTON TROTTING CLUB. SUMMER MEETING. NEE ORO LEADING WINNER. WRITER SUCCESSFUL. GREAT FINISH IN PLATE. (Special to Times.) Auckland, December 15. The weather was very hot for the annual fixture of the Waipa Club at fe Awamutu. The attendance was large and the course in excellent order. The totalisator handled £26,689, an increase of £2,699 10/-. Archeen was a well backed third-favour-ite in the Pironga hurdles and gave nothing else a chance. He cut out the first half mile in a tick over 52, being half a dozen lengths in front of the strung-out field, laumai ran up to the leader at the five furlongs, but it was only on sufferance. Archeen finally won by a length and a half from the little fancied Taumai, two and a-half lengths awav being Mashoor with Whaka King, The’ Lamb, Spalpiko, Catonian following. The last-named, a firm favourite, wanted the race. The Kihikihi handicap was a great betting race, Valuation with an inexperienced apprentice rider being the actual favourite-. Storm Fiend was going easily in front a couple of lengths in advance of Gemlight, Black Maire, Valuation, Macroom, Ti Tree. Two furlongs from home, Gemlight challenged in the straight and soon collared Storm Fiend, beating him by a length and a-half. Ti Tree was only a neck away third and Macroom, Daylight, Black Maire, Romford followed. Master Latour and Welcome Boy hit the front after two furlongs had been covered in the Waipa Plate and were still clear at the home turn from Norval Tea, Biddy Comet, Perennis, Townman, Caulis and Praetor. In a good finish, Master Latour, Welcome Boy and Biddy Comet went over the line in that order with necks between them, the first pair each paying double figures. Then came Perennis, Caulis, Norval Tea, Queenstown, Praetor and Derry Belle. Prodice, a hot favourite, won the Te Awamutu Cup by a neck, but her winning margin might easily have been more and she will now come into stronger demand for the Auckland Cup. Her performance was really good for she did not receive an uninterruped passage. King Emerald and Marble King made the running, the latter pulling very hard, and passing the stands were clear of Transformer, Corinax, Prodice, Thursby, Flying Juliet and Micrometer. At the half mile, Transformer had gone to the front and Prodice a little further on moved up into second place there being less than a length between them at the home turn. King Emerald, Thursby, Marble King and Micrometer being right up and Corinax last over the last bit. Prodice was holding Transformer who had come over on her and won by a neck. Marble King was two lengths away just in front of King Emerald with Flying Juliet and Corinax further back. The latter could not handle the turns and his form can be overlooked. Hakanoa, a favourite for the Paterangi handicap, put up a fine performance. Quincoma was the pacemaker, but in the run home, Hakanoa asserted himself and won by half a length from Thurnus who was a length in front of Quincoma and Glena Bay with Wenday next. As was expected, Richfield won the Orakau Hack in easy fashion for which he was a big favourite. He was in front at the end of a couple of furlongs and with him at the home turn were Kawainga an'd Cruachan close up. being Lucky Alice, Prince of Orange, Archievale. The favourite was not unduly troubled to win by a clear length from Prince of Orange who was half a length in front of Cruachan. Kawainga ran a good race into fourth place and was followed by Day Lass, Lucky Alice, Rose Lupin and Pater?. Leitrim, a hot favourite in the Flying Handicap, went down to Mervette who was at an astonishing price. The favourite tried to win all the way, but Awarere and Town Bird were up with him. Crossing the top and into the straight with Mervette, Joy Germ and Volimond in a bunch, Mervette came through on the rails to beat Leitrim by a length, Awarere being a similar distance away third. The Begum did well to get up into fourth place and Joy Germ and Tea Time followed. The latter was.started from behind the field and lost a good deal of ground at the start. Sir Russell put up a good performance when he beat the slightly better favourite than Lunette. The winner had the better run throughout and he won by a neck. Black Maire was a length away and Flying Prince and Joy Girl followed. This made Sir Russell’s third win on end. RACING AT ROSEHILL. AN ANCIENT MAORILANDER SUCCESSFUL. THE BANKER WINS AGAIN.
