CLIFDEN NOTES

SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) On Monday evening a meeting of the Clifden School Committee was held in the Clifden School. Mr C. Gardner (chairman) presided over a full attendance, including Messrs W. Diack, S. Sanford, J. Mair and W. Whyte. Correspondence was read, including the annual report.

The suggestion for obliterating common property in the school, recommended by the Health Department, was accepted, and the committee recommended the teacher to adopt it. Mr J. Sanford’s tender for the supply of fuel for the ensuing year was accepted. The committee sanctioned the purchasing of four tennis racquets and two balls to enable the pupils to play tennis on a lawn tennis court constructed on-the playground. Holidays were granted the school on Otautau Show day and Invercargill Royal Show day. Kitchen Evening. On Wednesday evening the Clifden Hall was the scene of a very sociable gathering of the friends of Miss Mary Fowle, who is about to be married. The evening took the form of a dance intermingled with songs and games. The music was supplied by Mr James Laurie’s Majestic Radio operated by Master Harry Laurie. Mr Laurie is to be thanked for his generosity. Mr A. Mathieson contributed a song. After supper Mr J. Gardiner called on Mr W. J. McLaren to say a few words. Mr McLaren spoke of the popularity of Miss Mary Fowle and Mr Phil Hardy. The young couple had been

brought up and educated in the district and he could safely say that wherever they resided they would be an acquisition. Miss Fowle had been a very active member of the Western Star Hockey Club. Mr Phil Hardy had been an active member in the sport of the district also. On behalf of all those present, Mr McLaren expressed good wishes. After the gifts were opened Mr Hardy thanked all for their kindness and good wishes.
