ART UNION

DRAWN LAST NIGHT. ONE PRIZE TO SOUTHLAND. There was a circle of tense faces around the apparatus at the drawing of the HelpAll Art Union last night, but Southlanders were doomed to disappointment for of the 13 prizes, only one, worth £5, went to a resident of Invercargill. The prizes were drawn as follows: — First, £3OO, C222B6.—Miss C. Williams, 231 Manchester street, Christchurch. Second, £lOO, 849576.—J. Freeman, Meatata, Auckland.

Third, £5O, A32BBs.—Hiki Te Rangi, Pakotai.

The following receive alluvial gold to the value of £5 each: —B46oS9, F. Stickley, 107 Symonds street, Auckland; 843439, A. Brown, Ohiniwaiwai, Waikato; 810753, A. and H. Geddes, Dee street, Invercargill; 824130, Mrs Efford, 111 Forfar street, St. Albans, Christchurch; 840201, W. L. Jackson, Waihi; A 47285, J. O’Keefe, Palmerston North; 821599, Mrs A. Munro, 23 Atherley Road, Christchurch; E 23002, 1. Burgess, 5500 Sussex street, Ponsonby, Auckland; “Fifteen Pots,” Sydenham, Christchurch; E 22434, W. Olson, Te Kopura, near Dargaville. The apparatus used for the draw was a stand from which seven bags containing numbered marbles were hung. The first bag contained the index numbers,' the next five the figures, while the last contained the prize numbers. The actual drawing of the marbles was done by various spectators. The first prize was drawn the third time. In all, owing to unsold tickets, 59 draws were made for the 13 prizes. The draw was made under the supervision of Sergeant Abel, the assistant Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs (Mr P. J. Kelleher), the president of the Rugby Union (Mr C. A. Davis), the treasurer of the art union (Mr D. Cuthbertson,) and the secretary (Mr J. Richardson). The art union was organized by the Southland Rugby Union for the purpose of raising funds for improvements to Rugby Park, but as it clashed with the Aero Quo Art Union of Auckland, the sales were not as great as had been expected. Southland sales were particularly disappointing. Some 34,000 tickets were sold and approximately £lOO will be made.
