FEDERAL TARIFF

ENGLISH FIRMS HIT IMPORTERS CANCELLING ORDERS THE HOSIERY TRADE (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 7 pjn.) London, November 24. Midland hosiery firms complain that Australian importers are cancelling orders for term of thousands of pairs of stockings in consequence of the revised Federal tariff. Mr J. 11. Cooper, ex-chairman of the Hosiery Federation, declared that the last revision of the Australian tariff annihilated the underwear trade. The new duties, which were even more ferocious, would annihilate the hosiery trade. Mr Gregory Meakin, secretary of the Nottingham Chamber of Commerce, said he was urgently advising members not to accept Australian cancellations of orders. The goods in many cases were already made and must be paid for.
