AN ESSENTIAL BASE
EARL JELLICOE ON SINGAPORE. INTERESTS IN THE PACIFIC. London, November 23. AU the naval authorities agree that Singapore is essential. Earl Jellicoe stated to a Sun representative that naval reductions might mean a base on rather smaller lines than originally proposed, but he was confident Australia and New Zealand would resent any proposal for abandonment or seriously postponing the completion. In this respect they would be most justified, as the base was absolutely necessary for the protection of the interests of the Empire in the Pacific.
