RETURNED SOLDIERS
INVERCARGILL ASSOCIATION. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The fortnightly meeting of the executive was held in the club rooms on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Mr A. Wachner presiding over the following members, Messrs J. W. Puckey, P. Baldwin, R. B. Adams and the secretary (Mr M. Stanton). The work of the past half-year was reviewed, the members expressing appreciation of the progress being made and the amount of matter dealt with. Although it is 11 years since hostilities ceased, a perusal of the files' shows that the necessity of supporting the association is as great as at any time since its inauguration, possibly • more so, for as time goes on it is found that large numbers of returned men who were discharged class A and apparently fitare now breaking down in health, and it is this class particularly who appreciates the assistance of the association in proving disability attributable to war service. Membership is increasing steadily but slowly, the number financial at date being 300. The Hospital Visiting Committee reported on its visits to the hospitals. There were 12 patients in the Southland Hospital at time of visit. A resolution was passed expressing the appreciation and thanks of the executive to the Southland Hospital Board for the cordial relations at all times existing between that body and the association, and for the care, patient attention and sympathetic treatment extended the returned soldiers in the institutions under its jurisdiction. The secretary was instructed to draft a letter conveying the purport of the resolution to the chairman and members of the board. ■lt was decided that a letter of thanks and appreciation be forwarded to the president of the War Funds Association for the valuable co-operation and facilities extended the Returned Soldiers’ Association in procuring evidence for the Commission of Inquiry, and for authorizing their secretary (Mr Farrant) to proceed to Dunedin to tender evidence on behalf of both associations. It was also decided to write Major McHugh' thanking him for his co-operation on Armistice Day. The secretary reported six pension cases were dealt with. Four are under consideration, one sent for observation , and one granted increase. Four cases requiring assistance were referred to the War Funds Association for consideration. Advice was received that the War Pensions Board would hold a sitting at Invercargill on November 29.
