LUMSDEN NOTES

TENNIS ASSOCIATION. (From Our Correspondent). A meeting of the Northern District Tennis sub-association was held on Wednesday when the following delegates were present: Messrs J. Clouston, W. Johnson, Lumsden, F. Henderson, H. Jewiss, Balfour, L. Guyton, E. O'Brien (Riversdale). Correspondence was received from the Southland Lawn Tennis Association in connection with the proposed match with a town team on Labour Day. The letter had been addressed to the previous secretary of the sub-association and must have gone astray. A copy of the letter was enclosed, also a letter’expressing regret at the failure to arrange a match and a suggestion that a match be arranged in December or January. The secretary of the sub-association, Mr H. Jewiss, stated that he had received no notice of a match with a town team except the notes appearing in the Southland Times. He had written to the Southland Association for an explanation. The action of the secretary in writing to the association was approved, members expressing regret at the unfortunate circumstances which prevented a match being arranged. It was decided that December 14 be suggested as a suitable date for a match with a town team at Lumsden.

The secretary, Waikaia Tennis Club, wrote stating that the Waikaia team would be unable to play in the second round if the association were agreeable. The club also wished to know if their players would be eligible to compete in the single tourney. —To be informed that the players may enter for the tourney if the club affiliation fee is paid. The matter of allowing the team to take part in the second round was held over until the January meeting. It was decided to hold the singles tourney at Lumsden on Saturday, December 7. The matter of arranging the finances for the tourney was left with the Lumsden club. The Lumsden delegate suggested that no entry fee be charged for competing, but that a charge of 1/6 be made for admission to the courts. This was readily agreed to and it was decided to recommend the above charges to the Lumsden club. Entries close with the secretary on Saturday Novem&er 30 and handicaps and draw will be announced on the morning of the tourney. The tournament will commence at 10.30 a.m. General. A meeting of all interested in motor races was held on Monday when arrangements were made for holding a race meeting at an early date. Mr J. Rodgers was elected president and Mr. W. Williamson, secretary. A strong committee was formed to make final arrangements. Correspondence was received from the Invercargill motor cycle club, stating that competitors would be pleased to visit Lumsden on the date .of races.

The annual installation ceremony of Lodge Taringtura took place at the Masonic Hall on Wednesday when there was a large attendance of visitors. A special train brought nearly one hundred visitors from Invercargill and large numbers travelled by motor. After the ceremony the visitors were entertained at a banquet. The countryside received a good drenching on Tuesday and Wednesday when exceptionally heavy rain was experienced. The rain was gladly welcomed as the country was in a parched state owing to the warm winds which previously prevailed. The gardens and agricultural lands present a freshened appearance since the rain. The recreation grounds, which suffered severely as a result of the dry weather, have now been greatly benefited. Mr W. L. Hunter, stationmaster, left for Nelson on Wednesday for his new position. Mr Wildermuth is acting as relieving officer in charge of the Lumsden station at present. Mr Cassidy, who has been relieving officer at the office of the Inspector of Permanent Ways, has returned to Invercargill.
