“TO MY WIDOW”

CAPTAIN SCOTT’S LAST LETTER. WRITTEN WHILE AWAITING DEATH. London, November 22. An hitherto unpublished letter from Captain R. F. Scott, addressed: “To my widow,” is included in the life of the explorer by Stephen Gwynn and published by John Lane. The letter, which was written when Captain Scott was awaiting death, said: “If anything happens to me I should like you to know how much you’ve meant to me and what a pleasant recollection is with me as I depart. I want you to take the whole thing sensibly, as I am sure you will. The boy will be your comfort. You know I cherish no sentimental rubbish about remarriage and when the right man comes to help you in life you ought to be your own happy self again.” The widow is now Lady Hilton Young.
