SOUTH SCHOOL

INFANT DEPARTMENT HEATING. DEPUTATION SEEKS ASSISTANCE. With the object of obtaining assistance from the Southland Education Board in the installation of a suitable heating system in the infant department, a deputation from the South School Committee consisting of the chairman (Mr C. W. Patton) and the secretary (Mrs Garrett) waited upon the board at its meeting yesterday. Addressing the board Mr Patton said that the committee was being called upon to raise £lOO, a third part of the cost of the installation, arid this it found impossible to do at present. In the matter of effecting improvements to the grounds it had to raise about £3OO, a considerable sum already having been spent in that direction. It was essential that the heating system should be installed as the present method was obsolete, and the committee was seeking assistance in the matter from the board which had treated the school well in the past.

In reply to a question from the chairman of the board (Mr A. W. Jones), Mr Patton said that the committee could not offer anything at present.

Mrs Garrett also spoke, stressing the urgency of obtaining a suitable heating system for the kindergarten and stating "that the committee was not in the position at present to contribute the amount required towards the cost. Mr Patton said that the school was becoming so large,.having a roll of 780 at the present time, that special efforts were required every year to meet the expenditure. "We are getting a regular begging institution," he said, "asking for contributions to the school. It is most humiliating. It is quite impossible for us at present to raise our share of £lOO towards the heating system. The deputation was thanked and assured that the board would deal with the matter promptly. It recognized, Mr Jones said, that the committee had done excellent service in the past. A resolution was carried that the Department be asked to find two-thirds of the amount and the board would find the remaining third.
