CUT RATE TRADING
ACTION DEEMED NECESSARY. ' MEETING OF SHOPKEEPERS. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, November 22. A meeting attended by about 30 shopkeepers formed a committee to make arrangements for a mass meeting of city shopkeepers to fully consider the matter of cut rate trading and decide on some course of action. The convener of the meeting, Mr Harold Schmidt, advocated a Shopkeepers’ Federation to induce the manufacturers and merchants to discontinue giving bonuses and discounts to purchasers of large quantities. He thought an effort should be made to “black-list” cut-rate shops, and if this failed similar steps should be taken with merchants who encouraged them. If small retailers were forced out of existence and the city run by two or three large stores, the shops would be left empty and there would be an alarming increase in unemployment among shop assistants.
