STUMPAGE RATES

REDUCED TO 1923 LEVEL.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wellington, October 4.

The Hon. W. B. Taverner, Commissioner of State Forests, stated to-day that in view of the depression in the sawmilling industry, stumpage rates on future sales of standing timber would be reduced to those obtaining in 1923, the reduction varying from one shilling to ninepence board measure according to the locality. It is hoped that this will tend to the relief not only of the industry, but unemployment.
