LABOUR PARTY
SCENE AT CONFERENCE
WOMEN COMMUNISTS IN GALLERY
HOME SECRETARY INSULTED
(United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright) (Rec. 7.0 p.m.) London, October 3.
A sensation was caused at the Labour Conference by a revival of suffragette methods in the interests of Communists.
Directly Mr J. R. Clynes, the Home Secretary, entered two young women dressed in black - arose in the gallery and screamed: “Down w’ith Clynes, the persecutor! Release Indian prisoners!” The stewards were surprised to find both securely padlocked to the railing, and it took a quarter of an hour to sever the chains. The women all the time continued shrieking. Finally they were carried out struggling wildly, one of them bleeding. A number of extremist delegates angrily made a scene, protesting against the harshness and cruelty of the stewards, so another quarter of an hour was lost before business could be resumed.
The chairman, Mr Herbert Morrison, Minister of Transport, condemned male Communists for sending women to do the rough and tumble job and putting women into the firing line instead of coming themselves.—Australian Press Association.
