VAGRANT VERSE

CONQUEST.

(Written for the Southland Times.) Blood made runnels in the land, a silver sword cut through the dark of doubt, and from a caesar hand a conquered slave won strength to re-embark in living. And giving to her tresses, dipped in night’s star-glistening black, a silver thread, a sword, she won to caesar heights and crowned her victory with a rose of red. —Shaun O’Sullivan. Invercargill, October 4, 1929.
